The Bus Transport Center is one of the first stops upon entering the San Diego Zoo. Nestled in an exotic forest, the Transport Center provides patrons easy access to the Zoo’s double-decker buses. The forested environment gives a relaxing and calming sensation to park-goers as they make their way to the station. The green frame of the transport center helps it blend naturally with the plantings. Wood flooring adds to the natural aesthetic of the station. The main building is constructed with a tasteful pairing of wood and masonry (totaling 8,000 square feet) and includes various site improvements in and around the area (totaling 18,000 square feet). The project also required the extensive use of steel, various other metals, and access brides.
The Elephant Odyssey at the San Diego Zoo stands out as a signature project, combining structural precision with immersive exhibit design. Nielsen Construction California delivered all structural concrete and steel work, in addition to constructing the exhibit environments that support both animal wellbeing and guest experience. The enclosure was carefully designed to replicate a natural habitat, featuring soft earth surfaces, a water element with a fountain, and custom rockwork, wood logs, and landscape elements. Thoughtfully integrated viewing pathways bring visitors in close proximity to the elephants while maintaining a safe and comfortable environment. Architectural details, including curving wood-and-steel railings and interactive design features, create a sense of flow and discovery throughout the exhibit. Sculptural elements and themed accents enhance the experience, making Elephant Odyssey both engaging and visually distinctive for guests of all ages.

The SeaWorld Animal Shade at Dolphin Point project involved the installation and modification of shade structures within an active marine exhibit at SeaWorld San Diego. Work included the installation of new structural columns and reconfiguration of existing elements, along with associated finish upgrades. Completed within a live theme park environment, the project required phased construction, restricted work hours, and careful coordination to maintain safe public access throughout construction.
Nielsen Construction performed targeted demolition and concrete restoration work at the Orca exhibit at SeaWorld San Diego, supporting ongoing facility maintenance within an active, high-traffic environment. The scope included selective demolition, fence removal and pool protection, and precise concrete patching to seamlessly match existing pebbled finishes. Delivered with a total construction value of approximately $5,233, the project was completed efficiently within a single-day schedule to minimize disruption to park operations while maintaining strict safety and quality standards.
